Friday nights opener
started off on the right path after Rob Jenkins qualified the Mozely
Rose #89 Chevy on the outside pole position, just one hundredth of a
second off of the pole sitter Chris Hopkins [43]. This great qualifying
effort was the result of many changes the team made after the first two
practices." We weren't very good in practice," said Jenkins. "We made
some adjustments to free the car up and almost got the pole." Jenkins
14.93 qualifying effort bettered his first lap of 15.13 by two tenths
which was good enough for the outside pole.
Because of the
inversion rule, Jenkins would start the first 50 lap feature in the
sixth position. After the drop of the green flag in a 21 car field,
Jenkins would hold the sixth position for the first half of the race and
eventually advance into the fifth position. On lap 28, the Mozely Rose
Chevy picked up debris from the track, cutting down the left rear tire
which brings out a caution flag. Jenkins would come down pit road for service and
return to the race at the tail end of the field.
Through attrition,
avoiding trouble and just great driving, Jenkins amazingly makes it back
through the field into the top ten and eventually challenges Scott
Turlington [48] for the fifth position with laps winding down.
Turlington and Jenkins race side by side for several laps with
Turlington eventually winning the battle for fifth place. Shayne
Lockhart [11], Doug Godsey [05], Bubba Hubbard [14], Chris Dodson [0]
and Scott Turlington [48] round out the top five, with Jenkins [89]
finishing in the sixth position.
In the second
feature Jenkins would run the entire race in the top five, but with
major transmission trouble. Jenkins was able to hold off Roy Hendrick
[39] for the fifth position despite a fading clutch issue." We were
fortunate to finish where we did," said Jenkins. "The clutch was
slipping pretty bad." Later the team found a cracked pressure plate and
a shattered bearing around the input shaft of the transmission.
Not a bad night
considering all of the issues. Next race... The Cystic Fibrosis 175 on
May 1st with special guests Denny Hamlin, Curtis Karkham and Kyle Busch.
